Dublin Castle,

500 JAN 38 21st January, 1898.

Sir,

With reference to your letter of the 13th instant relating to the desire of Mr. MacMichael, Principal Warder in the Victoria Goal, Hong Kong, to revert to duty in the Irish Prisons Service, I am directed by the Lord Lieutenant to state that Warder Mac- Michael, by his transfer to the Colonial Prison Service is regarded by the General Prisons Board as having permanently severed his connection with the Imperial Service. The position he held in the Irish Prisons Service has since been filled up,

and, in the view of the Board, the only way in which he could

be taken hack is by receiving a new appointment.

Before an application for re-appointment could be entertain-

od, the Board would desire to know Warder MacMichael's reason

for his application, whether his conduct in the Colonial Service

has been exemplary, whether his health is good, and whether the

authorities under whom he is at present serving consider him

deserving of this indulgence.

In the event of his re-appointment and in the absence of

special sanction for his resuming the salary he had when he

left viz: £52, he would have to recommence at the beginning of

the scale of salary for Ordinary Warders viz:- £50.

'he Under Secretary

of State,

Colonial Office.

I am,

Sir,

Your obedient Servant,
